Escuela Especial “San José de Calasanz“

About the institution

Thanks to help from a group of priests and people in Cuenca concerned about the lack of institutes offering special education, in 1996 San Jose de Calasanz School was created to help students with special needs and low economic resources.

Besides education, the institution offers handcrafts workshops approved by the Ecuadorian ministry of work as well as the Board of craftsmen. This constitutes an enormous help for the students, since once they leave the school they will be able to get a job in the craft they have chosen helped by the certificate they get once they finish the courses (“Titulación Artesanal”), or even better, start their own businesses.
With this vision, the school has also initiated entrepreneurship workshops to help the students realize what they may do once they leave the institution.

The institution is a pioneer in the country offering a certificate that is supported by the board of craftsmen defence (Junta de defensa del Artesano) and an example to many other institutions in Ecuador.

Description of the work
At Escuela San José de Calasanz, you’ll be able to give something back to very nice students that will be eager to learn.
The centre welcomes volunteers with good ideas or crafts that could help students get a job once they finish school.
If you have notions of ludotherapy, this may be a great help as well.
Physical therapy and outdoor activities are also welcome.

These are the activities the centre offers already:

  • Cooking courses
  • Bakery
  • Pottery
  • Making pieces of decoration for houses.
  • Marquetry

Although you may help in the workshops already available, bringing a new project may result in a new alternative of work, this would be great for the students as well as the institution

To work At San Jose de Calasanz you will need a lot of patience as well as total commitment to your work. Some notions of special education will come in handy when working at the institution.

The School works in the morning, depending on the activity you choose, a schedule will be fixed your you once you start working there.
